Politics Is Not MY Aim

The unfortunate political events that are occurring are leading me a stray in the form of speaking about the hour at hand.

Politics is not my aim. It may pay the bills but it has no depth.

Politics is man's illusion that he runs the world.

I am not interested in the ever changing, mostly smoldering, political house of the modern state of Israel. But I truly do not understand what our leaders are out to accomplish.

This will lead to peace?

There is so much pain in our midst. This nation is reeling from the effects of uprooting its own. It is crying over the effort invested in 30 years of community and economic success that is about to be choked.

The men and woman that came to Gaza made their homes only dispersing sand. There was nothing else there. Those who meant no harm, are being harmed. They are some of the best people in that they are good people.

My friends, this is the story of a modern tragedy.
The tragedy could not have come at a worse time, the day after the fast of Tisha B'Av.

Tisha B'Av is the saddest day on the Jewish calendar. For several years now I've marveled at the misconception that just because Jews fast on Yom Kippur it is a sad day. It is not.
Yom Kippur is a joyous solemn day.

Tisha B'Av commemorates the destruction of the First and Second Temples and the fall of the previous commonwealth. It is sad in every way.

I must say I've had some truly meaningful Tisha B'Av's in Israel over the past six years feeling the day and meditating on what the destruction of the Temple meant to the Jewish people.

However, this year's Tisha B'Av is the heaviest because though the fast ends at sun down, Jewish life in parts of the land of Israel will come to an end in a matter of days.

There is reason to believe good will eventually rise from this terrible decree.

But woe unto us that we have to witness this.

I never thought I'd use the word 'woe' and truly understand it.

I must be rabbi and able to admit it.

If you're reading this and you support what is about to happen, forgive my antics, I've been fasting all day and must be delirious.
